You will never be able to escape from your heart. So itโ€™s better to listen to what it has to say.

What if one heart interferes with another heart? For example, say Gollum loves Katniss, but Katniss loves Gale. If Gollum was Peeta, then it might have made sense for him to try to win over Katniss. But Gollum is not even part of the same literary universe. He’s a balding, irksome creature who lives in a cave. He has been in isolation for so long that he will never be able to function properly in a romantic relationship. If he broke down in a tearful confession while walking with Katniss, then what would that accomplish? It would ruin their perfectly pleasant walk.

Gollum should step aside and cheer on Katniss to reunite with Gale (or someone like him). The best Gollum can hope for is a non-binding agreement. “Look,” he could say. “To my knowledge, no one has ever been attracted to me. This may change one day, but I doubt it. So how should I go through life? There will be times when I will desperately need to believe life is worth living. I’ve been through some of those moments already, and each time my thoughts focused on you. This brings me to the non-binding agreement. You seem fearful of being alone in the distant future when you are old and frail. I doubt this will be the case for you. Still, if you are alone when you’re old and frail, then feel free to contact me. I could help you if you have trouble climbing stairs, or if you just need a reading companion. Of course, you don’t have to contact me. But knowing we have a non-binding agreement could help both of us alleviate some fears.”
