Poppy

Arm yourself with poppies, for we are walking into a wild grove.
Sing in your loudest voice, I in my softest –
for together, we are sweeter than honey from the comb.

(Image: my drawing of a poppy – or “papavero,” in Italian.)

A sketch I did while traveling in Assisi, Italy, in 2018. On the same page, I’d written a few words as I was sitting before the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi: “PAX. Peace of the LORD be upon you. / The winds of hope blow past your door. / The sands of joy enrobe your feet. / The sun of love warms your face and invites you to be free.”
